This Louisville Orchestra concert celebrates American Music with a concert that features new works by American women.

Bearthoven brings their unique brand of investigative new music for piano, percussion, and bass to LPR on April 18th to kick off the release of their debut album, Trios (out on Cantaloupe Music, May 5th). Over three years in the making, the record celebrates a community built around performers who play new music and the composers who write for them.

For this release, Bearthoven will perform three highlighted works from Trios: Adrian Knight’s The Ringing World, Fjóla Evans Shoaling, and Brooks Frederickson’s Undertoad.
The night also includes the premiere of a newly commissioned work, American Dream, from Brooklyn’s timelessly lyrical and occasionally dystopian composer Scott Wollschleger.

The show begins with a solo set by Fjóla Evans performing her original music for solo cello and electronics. Based on her love of Icelandic folk-song and drones, the music explores looping white-noise, archival and field recordings to build twitching minimal soundscapes. She will be performing pieces inspired by her study of Icelandic Rímur, a type of intonement of skaldic poetry.

The culminating event of Bearthoven's residency at NYU Steinhardt. Bearthoven will be premiering seven pieces by the Steinhardt Graduate Composers collective.

Doug Varone and Dancers celebrate 30 years of impassioned choreography with three works representing the past, present, and future of this peerless company. Their major revival of the Philip Glass-scored Possession (1994), inspired by A.S. Byatt’s century-spanning novel of the same name, is an entwined portrait of solitude and desire. Varone’s latest work Folded, set to music by MacArthur fellow Julia Wolfe, renders the intimate interplay between two dancers falling in and out of sync. And in ReComposed, inspired by abstract expressionist Joan Mitchell’s pastel drawings, dancers careen across a paper-white stage to the crescendos of Michael Gordon’s Dystopia.

Six grand pianos and six virtuoso pianists from New York bestride St David’s Hall’s stage. Described as “awesome” (Sequenza 21) and “inventive” (New York Magazine), Grand Band champion new music from today’s composers, ranging through classical and pop-crossover to post minimal.  There are classics by Reich, Lang and Glass, a world premiere from Ben Wallace and music from Wales by John Metcalf.

Singer-composer Ted Hearne premieres an intimate and ecstatic collection of vocal music, accompanied by a band of longtime friends and new collaborators.

Vocalists Peabody Southwell, fresh from season appearances with LA Opera, and Allison Semmes, having just stepped out of the role of Diana Ross on Broadway, give rare recital performances. Solo instrumentalists Mariel Roberts, Taylor Levine and Philip White, staples of New York’s contemporary music community, join The Nouveau Classical Project and San Francisco’s eclectic and bold duo The Living Earth Show as the evening’s dynamic ensemble. R WE WHO R WE, the vocal/electronics duo of Ted Hearne and Philip White, also perform selections of their upcoming sophomore release.

Bonjour is a low string band with drums/percussion founded in 2012 by bassist and composer Florent Ghys whose performance corresponds to the Museum's exhibition Pierre Chareau: Modern Architecture and Design. Chareau, originally from Bordeaux, rose to become one of Paris's most fashionable designers of the early 20th Century. Ghys, also originally from Bordeaux, is one of New York's most creative composer-performers of the early 21st Century. Combining basses, cello, guitars, percussion, and voices, Ghys has assembled a sizzling group of some of New York's top young musicians and Bang on a Can regulars to create an unusual sound world that's equal parts groove, melody and meditation. From jazz-laced indie-pop to ambient chamber music, Bonjour shimmers with influences that push it beyond the safety net of "new classical" music to something altogether edgy, adventurous, and even slightly art-damaged.

American cellist and producer Maya Beiser has spent twenty years pioneering a new music for the instrument with contemporary composers, using amplification, pre-recorded tracks, voice and film. In this bespoke recital she performs works written for her, including Steve Reich’s scintillating Cello Counterpoint, and Golijov’s urgent, multi-layered Mariel. A founder member of Bang-on-a-Can All Stars, she’ll present luminous works by David Lang and Michael Gordon, and the UK premiere by of Julia Wolfe’s new piece Emunah.

For their UAE debut, the All-Stars play a program including signature works by Bang on a Can founders Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe, plus multi-media works from the All-Stars’ Field Recordings initiative by Steve Reich, Anna Clyne, Bryce Dessner, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Christian Marclay, and more. At the center is a world premiere piece commissioned by The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi Festival by celebrated Emirati-American composer Mohammed Fairouz. Their UAE debut will include a world premiere piece written for them by Emirati-American composer Mohammed Fairouz, commissioned by The Arts Center and the Abu Dhabi Festival.

The seven members of the Rushes Ensemble bring Rushes, Michael Gordon's inspiring piece for seven bassoons, to National Sawdust in Brooklyn on Thursday, January 26.

Rushes takes its place alongside Gordon’s Timber for expanding the boundaries of a single instrument’s repertoire into unknown (and at times, otherworldly) spaces. Like Timber, which maps new percussive territory for the simantra—a simple two-by-four slab of wood, amplified and played in a group of six to yield trance-like sonic textures—Rushes brings out tonal and timbral aspects of the bassoon that are meant to induce a quasi-meditative, almost ecstatic state, in the listener as well as the performer.

From the haunting Hans Christian Anderson story comes this Pulitzer Prize-winning parable. Composed by David Lang, it's influenced by Bach's St. Matthew Passion, and described as "poignant...and consoling" (New York Times). This performance is staged by R. B. Schlather whose directorial vision was hailed by the New York Times as "intriguing" and "inventive" in The Met's magical Medieval Sculpture Hall.

Music that asks questions - from David Lang's hauntingly beautiful where you go(after the Book of Ruth, 2015), to Toivo Tulev's soaring And then in silence there with Me be only You (2002). With a world premiere of Aaron Helgeson based on Kazim Ali’s translation of Marguerite Duras’ L’Amour. The centerpiece of the program is Kevin Puts' choral cycle To Touch the Sky (2012), on writings of Sappho, Mother Teresa, Mirabai, Amy Lowell, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Christina Rosetti, and Hildegard of Bingen. A contemplative, rich program also featuring the U.S. premiere of David’s last spring, written in memory of Marion Boulton "Kippy" Stroud, founder of Philadelphia’s Fabric Workshop."

The Dublin Guitar Quartet goes electric for the third installment of Bang on a Can founding composer Michael Gordon’s series exploring the untapped possibilities of select instruments.

Cantaloupe artist pianist Lisa Moore and new music maverick violinist Kate Stenberg unite for a concert on December 18 at the innovative San Francisco Center for New Music, presenting three works by Cantaloupe artists Martin Bresnick (celebrating his 70th birthday) Kate Moore (the west coast premiere of her Sliabh Beagh for a singing pianist) and Michael Gordon. Time Flies also presents music by Philip Glass, Somei Satoh, Bay Area's own Amy X Neuburg.

Musical compositions inspired by written and spoken words comprise this concert. The Contemporary Directions Ensemble, a vibrant and diverse group dedicated to performing repertoire from the 20th and the 21st centuries from a wide range of styles in a variety of instrumentations, will perform works by Lembit Beecher, David Lang, Missy Mazzoli, Caroline Shaw and Frederic Rzewski.
