World Premiere of Steve Reich's Quartet

Colin Currie returns to Southbank Centre with four captivating Steve Reich scores including a world premiere.

Steve Reich and Colin Currie open with one of Reich's most popular pieces, the mesmerising Clapping Music, which started life simply as 'a piece of music that needed no instruments beyond the human body' (Reich).

In the rest of the concert, the Colin Currie Group highlight Reich's interest in tuned percussion instruments, such as marimbas and vibraphones, which have been a feature of his compositions since studying Javanese gamelan and African music in the early 1970s.
