Written for bassoon and wind ensemble, Nico Muhly’s Reliable Sources, featuring Michael Harley on bassoon, draws its main inspiration from the history of the bassoon in sacred music, particularly in the work of English organist and composer Orlando Gibbons (1583–1625).

“I’ve written a great deal of music which could be described as a conversation with (or indeed a love letter to) Gibbons,” Muhly writes in his program note for the piece, “and I’ve always found a kind of artistic solace and surprise in his music. So the title of this concerto refers to that music as a source for endless discovery.”
