Shelter, refuge. A shelter that provides protection against the outside world and its dangers, physically and emotionally. A primary need, 'living' and 'build' instinct. A human right, a matter of course. Not at all obvious.
Shelter began as a collaboration between three composers (Julia Wolfe, David Lang and Michael Gordon) and a filmmaker (Bill Morrison). The result is a grand, captivating multimedia oratorio with large ensemble and video, specially written for the voices of Trio Mediaeval. It focuses on the various aspects of the home / shelter: the aesthetic beauty of building on the rituals of coming home to the destructive forces of nature that bring all that at risk.

Bang on a Can co-founder Michael Gordon is constantly staking out new territory—a quest exemplified by Hyper, his musical manifestation of a never-ending staircase that, curiously, delivers the climber back to the point where they began. Last year the Brazilian-Dutch choreographer Samir Calixto left a shattering impression with his 4 Seasons, that made us aware of our mortality to the sounds of Vivaldi. For his new performance Paradise Lost, he sought inspiration in John Milton’s epic poem of the same name from 1667, about man’s fall from grace and his banishment from Paradise. With a strong physical intensity, characteristic of Calixto’s work, apparently conflicting forces drive the dancers on. Light, dark, good, evil, holy and godless. Long enough until we see humanity as we know it: fragile, complex and mortal. Original compositions are by Kate Moore.
Paradise Lost tours the Netherlands throughout Spring 2015.
